D. A. Thomas wheel shaft

D. A. Thomas wheel shaft

The SS D.A.Thomas was named after Viscount Rhondda, a munitions and mining magnate. A large shallow draft steam powered sternwheeler, it measured 162 feet bow to stern and 37 feet across the beam. Originally built to transport oil and coal deposits out of the Peace country, it was an active freight and passenger steamer until 1930, when it was decomissioned. All that is left of this once proud river boat is the wheel shaft, which can be seen on the grounds of the local museum. The historic photo of the D.A. Thomas by E.Taylor on the Peace River cica 1930.
