Blakley Landing

Blakley Landing

Blakley Landing is on the north shore of the Peace River where the Alberta Government ferry now docks. In 1957, Everett Thomas Blakley and his sons Frank, Lealand and Val applied to the Department of Lands to homestead more land between the Peace and Smoky Rivers. Their application was refused because they did not have access to the land. Undaunted, the Blakleys purchased lumber from Harry Smith's mill and constructed a ferry. Once it was afloat, they reapplied for homesteads. This time, the application was granted, only under the condition that they would be self-supporting and build their own roads. From 1952 until the Alberta Government Ferry was commissioned in 1977, the Blakley family owned and operated the ferry which was used primarily to transport farm equipment to and from the farms.
