The Mackenzie Highway
The Mackenzie Highway followed a route surveyed in 1938 along the Battle River Trail for winter cat trains to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. In 1945, the Canadian and Alberta governments agreed to the building of the highway and, in 1950, the new all-weather route was named after Sir Alexander Mackenzie.
